University Housing Needs Safer Windows

Grand Forks toddler survives fall from third-story window

This article is about a 2-year-old boy who fell from a third-story window at the University of North Dakota apartment complex. As of right now, this boys injuries are unknown, but it is known that there was a window screen in place and there are no signs of foul play.

This story is too common. Basic window screens do not protect against child falls! It is important to pay attention to window safety in all living situations. Universities should be required to have stronger security screens like the Tough Tek screens. If a 2-year-old can fall through a screen this easily, imagine how easily it would be for a college student resting on a window ledge to loose balance and fall through. Incorporate the average alcohol consumption of college students and the chances of this type of situation increase!

Let's encourage our Universities to start practicing window safety to protect our children of all ages!
